NEW COURSE STARTING 12TH MAY 2011

Beginners

Here at Wellington Swords our aim is to encourage as many people as possible into the sport of fencing. Some will fence for enjoyment; some will want to reach their maximum potential. Some of our fencers are in the Great Britain cadet, junior, senior and veterans teams.  We are affiliated to British Fencing, fencing's governing body.

We concentrate on foil and epee. It is usual to learn foil first.

Because of the concentration required and the weight of the swords, you must be 8 years or older.

Beginner’s fencing courses are run three times a year - September, January and April. The junior beginner’s course is on Thursdays from 6 - 7 pm.  The adult beginners group, on Monday, runs alongside the club session.Fees include tuition and initial use of fencing equipment. Sports trousers with closed zips, T-shirt and clean non-marking trainers/squash shoes are all that is needed to start fencing.  Please request or download a registration form.

The club also runs taster fencing sessions for interested groups and schools. If you are interested in this option we are always happy to come to some sort of arrangement dependant on numbers .Please again use the contact information to get in touch.

FAQs

Is Fencing for me?

  • Fencing tends to appeal to those who enjoy activity but may not be keen on team or ball sports. You do not need to be powerful, just quick thinking!
  • If you are an individual who is perhaps not keen on team or ball sports but enjoys sport, challenges and  social contact then fencing is for you.
  • You are never too old to learn to fence provided you are reasonably fit.
  • To find out more read the British Fencing guide at http://www.britishfencing.com/British_Fencing

How do I learn to fence?

You will join a beginner’s fencing course so that you can learn the basic skills of fencing in a non-challenging environment. You will learn about fencing skills, rules and etiquette, and become fitter.  By the end of the course you should have achieved the basic skills of foil fencing (BFA level 1).  You can then enjoy club fencing.

For practical reasons, we have separated the youngsters from the taller, stronger older folk.

Parents please note:

You are most welcome to sit on a bench in the fencing salle for the first 2 sessions.  After this we ask you to wait outside the fencing salle – you may look through the doors!

We have found that the youngsters concentrate better without the distractions of an audience or mobile phones ringing.
